Toronto’s first mayor was a Scot. William Lyon Mackenzie was born and raised in Dundee before immigrating to North America in his 20s. He eventually settled in York and became a journalist and politician. Mackenzie was voted in as the city’s first mayor after York became Toronto in 1834. Known for his fiery attacks on existing power structures, he would later lead an unsuccessful revolt against the Canadian government in 1837.
